The Next Step - Getting Prepared For Life After Korea

Have you ever wondered what your next step in life will be? Are you an expat living here in Korea and have found yourself stuck in a rut? Maybe you’re a public school English teacher and see the cuts coming this next year and don’t feel ready to go back home yet? Maybe you don’t even know where to start when thinking about going back home. Enter Marsha Greenberg, a life coach with over 40 years experience in networking, strategic planning, and employment services.

“My job is to help people create a plan,” she says from her cozy apartment in Gyeongsan. “It’s about creating a strategic plan for your life.” Her motto is: “leave with a plan in your hand.” Greenberg began offering workshops this past year for those in the Daegu area who were discontent when thinking about their immediate futures or needed a little nudging to get the gears turning on realizing how to reach their goals. She outlines a common problem she encounters with some clients. “They might say: ‘You know, I’ve been in Korea for five years. I’ve been having a ball. But, I’m now in my thirties and I think I might like to get married and have a family...and it’s not happening to me here.’” Marsha explains further: “But how do you go back? You don’t know how to network. You don’t know how to put a resume together. You don’t know how to look for a job. So, those are also things that I work with people on.”

Each year that expats spend away from their homelands can slowly tick away at future business connections, networks fade a bit, and that tightly-written resume might loosen a little around the edges. “I have a client right now how is going back to graduate school in Canada. Her vision is to go back, go to graduate school, and stay. But how do people make that transition?” Greenberg continues:  “If someone decides they want to return home to the States, what I can offer them is how they can get themselves established before they go back. What kind of networks do you have? Who do you know? How do you contact them? What does it mean to be on LinkedIn? What does networking mean? What kind of a resume do you have?”

How about those who have been teaching English for the past few years and don’t know where to start looking when returning home? Greenberg’s advice is to understand that what you did here in Korea may not transition exactly into a similar program in your home country. However, that doesn’t mean it’s useless. She says: “How do you take what you’ve done and translate it into something that might be picked up somewhere else? It doesn’t have to be a school. I was just advising someone to contact the Girl Scouts or outdoor education programs, or even corporate programs. So, there’s lots of ways to take what you’ve done and shape it around what’s available.”

However, Greenberg’s program, “Coaching to Go”, is not only aimed at those looking to return home some day. She also has clients who are content with remaining in Korea, content with their jobs, but still feel that something might be lacking. She says: “They talk about the fact that they’d like to play the piano or they’d like to write, or they’d like to paint. They’d like to do something else with their life and for whatever reason, they’re not doing it. What I’m doing is saying to people: ‘Look you have one life. One precious life. Now, what do you want to do with it?’”

Coaching-to-Go typically consists of 3 1-hour sessions. Session One creates the personalized vision of her client and answers the question: “What do you want to do?” Session Two covers a more in-depth process highlighting how to actually implement and carry out the plan. Session Three is the true nuts and bolts of the process and discusses “What do I do now?”
