Built in 1963, Gyeongsan’s war memorial, Choonghon Top, is scheduled to be renovated and moved into the newly built Hyunchoong Park. The city has invested 5.5 billion won into the project and construction is expected to finish in December. The new park will be located at사정동 산4-1번지.
Hyunchoong Park has been established to cultivate patriotism, awaken the consciousness of citizens, and to create a place of historical education that honors those who gave their lives to defend Korean soil. The park will contain Choonghon Top, the Korean War Veterans Memorial Tower, Vietnam War Veterans Memorial, and a memorial for Medal of Honor recipients.
Construction began in May to create a new parking space around the park to make up for the heavier traffic.
Cho Hyun-Sook, the section chief of social welfare, said: “We plan to begin construction and installation work for the building in June and finish by the end of the year. We plan to hold a memorial service next year for the families of the fallen soldiers and our citizens at the newly renovated Choonghon Top.”
