Daegu City and the Daegu Tourist Association have arranged ‘My Friends’ (Tour Guide), a tourist information center that provides foreign language information to domestic and foreign tourists in Dongseongro, the tourism center of Daegu.
The group consists of eight foreign language speakers – four English speakers, two Japanese speakers and two Chinese speakers – and have been providing information to tourists since August. ‘My Friends’ not only provides detailed and professional information on Daegu sightseeing spots to domestic tourists, but also provides foreign tourists with accurate and friendly information using their fluent foreign language skills.
...there is an increased need to provide foreign language guidance services to domestic and foreign tourists...
Downtown Daegu is complicated to maneuver, with maze-like streets and alleys, and it can be hard for tourists to find their destination by only using a map or a leaflet. In addition, there is an increased need to provide foreign language guidance services to domestic and foreign tourists visiting Daegu, especially to foreign tourists whose numbers are increasing due to the availability of more direct flights to Daegu. Because of this, placing people to act as tourist information ‘friends’ who are fluent in three foreign languages, can help bridge the language barrier, which can be the most difficult part for foreign tourists.
...visitors can feel the vibe and spirit from the rich culture and history.
Dongseongro, where My Friends work, is the busiest area of Daegu and is comparable Myeong-dong in Seoul. It includes countless clothes shops showcasing the latest trends, cosmetic shops and restaurants, and is considered to be a place for culture, tours, festivals, events, and shopping. This area has the largest number of tourists in Daegu. Also, ‘My Friends’ are located in the Modern Alley area that includes the Yangnyeongsi Oriental Medicine Museum, Jeil Church, Gyonam YMCA Hall, and more along the 1.7-kilometer street stretching from Dongsan Cheongna Hill, Dongsan Missionary Houses to Yankjeong Alley and Jin Alley. In this area, visitors can feel the vibe and spirit from the rich culture and history. My Friends also offer information on a walking tour in this area.
The ‘My Friends’ teams of two, sporting red t-shirts, can be found in Dongseongro, Yakjeon Alley, and Modern History Alley area and offer professional guidance about Daegu tourism. They are striving to develop tourism in Daegu through continuous information exchange with existing tour information centers.
